Packed bed scrubbers are designed to remove gaseous or vaporous contaminants from gas streams. The process is done by exposing the polluted air stream to a scrubbing fluid that absorbs or chemically reacts with the pollutants. The cleaned air is then vented to the atmosphere, and the contaminated scrubbing fluid is either treated within approved limits or recovered and reused in other original processes.

There are two types of packed bed scrubbers:

Vertical Packed Bed Scrubber

In a vertical counter-flow design, the gas flows upwards while the scrubbing liquid flows down through the rows of sprays. Absorption of the gas occurs in the bulk section of the scrubber and the scrubbing liquid is introduced into the liquid through a spray or spray distribution system. High-efficiency mist eliminators remove entrained liquids. Clean gas is present at the top of the container.

Horizontal Packed Bed Scrubber

In a horizontal design, the gas flows horizontally while the scrubbing fluid flows downward through the liquid distribution system. The scrubber includes a random packing section where gas absorption takes place. High-efficiency mist eliminators remove entrained liquids. An integral sump sits at the bottom of the fill section, eliminating the need for an external tank.
