Waste to energy (WTE) plants convert solid waste into electricity and/or heat. However, the combustion of solid waste generates flue gases that contain a variety of pollutants, such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals. These pollutants can be harmful to human health and the environment if released into the atmosphere, so it is essential to treat the flue gases before they are released.

Exhaust gas from municipal waste

The most effective method of waste-to-energy (WTE) flue gas treatment:

Wet scrubbers are a type of air pollution control equipment that are used to remove particles and gases from industrial exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere.

Here's how wet scrubbers work:

Gas enters the scrubber: The exhaust gas enters the wet scrubber through an inlet, where it is forced to pass through a series of nozzles or spray headers that create a mist of water or other liquid.

Contact with liquid: As the gas passes through the mist, it comes into contact with the liquid droplets, which capture the particles and gases.

Particle capture: The liquid droplets capture the particles in the gas stream by wetting them and causing them to stick to the droplets. The liquid droplets grow in size as they collect the particles and eventually become large enough to be separated from the gas stream.

Gas-liquid separation: The gas and liquid mixture then enters a separator, where the liquid droplets are removed from the gas stream. This can be accomplished through a variety of methods, including centrifugal force, gravity, or impingement on a surface.

Disposal: The captured particles and gases are either disposed of or processed further, depending on the specific application.

Recirculation: In some wet scrubber designs, the liquid that has captured the particles and gases is recirculated back into the scrubber, where it is mixed with fresh water or other liquid to continue capturing pollutants.

Overall, wet scrubbers are an effective and reliable means of removing pollutants from exhaust gases and can be customized to meet the needs of different industries and applications.

The choice of flue gas treatment method depends on the specific pollutants present in the flue gas, the regulatory requirements, and the cost and efficiency of each method. Often, multiple methods are used in combination to achieve the desired level of pollution control.
