Customized different exhaust scrubber maintenance Your maintenance needs may vary, depending on the type of wet scrubber in your facility, so you should tailor a maintenance plan to reflect the specific technology used. For example, certain scrubbers are more sensitive to pressure and temperature changes than other types of scrubbers, requiring more frequent monitoring and adjustments. However, all scrubbers need replacing tower packing and internal components at approximately the same time interval. Some of the most common types of scrubbers are:

Hydrogen sulfide scrubber

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) scavengers or H2S scrubbers are located in hydrocarbon processing facilities and various industrial facilities. These scrubbers remove H2S (a poisonous and foul-smelling gas) from the gas stream to protect workers. Filtering out H2S also helps protect pipes and equipment because H2S can interact with steel and cause iron sulfide corrosion.

H2S scavengers are challenging to maintain scrubbers because they are susceptible to temperature and pressure changes. This attribute means that they require closer monitoring and more frequent pH and temperature adjustments.

Carbon dioxide degasser

In municipal and industrial environments, aqueous carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common cause of acidity in water, so carbon dioxide degassers are common in such facilities. The CO2 degasser removes CO2 from the water to prevent corrosion of pipes and machinery and keep fish healthy during aquaculture operations.

Like H2S scrubbers, CO2 degassers are more challenging to maintain than other systems because they are sensitive to pressure and temperature changes. You may also need to make frequent adjustments to ensure proper pH, especially in aquaculture applications.

Nitrogen oxide scrubber

Nitrogen oxide scrubbers protect workers, the public, and the environment and ensure regulatory compliance by removing nitrogen oxides (such as nitrogen oxides (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) from the air stream. NOx scrubbers can be used in many industries, from the petrochemical industry to food processing to wastewater treatment. Regarding the sensitivity to pressure and temperature changes, the NOx scrubber needs to be adequately monitored and adjusted.

Sulfur dioxide scrubber

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) scrubbers are essential for various industrial facilities. SO2 emissions may threaten the environment, factory workers, and people living near a given facility, and facilities need to control their SO2 emissions to maintain regulatory compliance. The SO2 scrubber can provide this control by removing malodorous and potentially harmful gases. In terms of sensitivity to pressure and temperature changes, the SO2 scrubber also has moderate sensitivity.

Hydrochloric acid scrubber

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is the most common sulfur-free gas emitted from manufacturing plants. Landfills and wastewater treatment facilities also emit HCl. It is essential to filter HCl with an HCl scrubber because the gas may be toxic and corrosive around the liquid and produce irritating fumes.

Factories can use horizontal or vertical scrubber configurations to filter out the gas. Compared with other types of scrubbers, the maintenance of hydrochloric acid scrubbers is relatively easy because HCl scrubbers are only very sensitive to changes in pH, but not to changes in temperature and pressure, just like other types of systems.

Pure water washing tower

Pure water scrubbers are rarer than many other types of scrubbers. Still, they are helpful in specific applications, such as the inability to add other chemicals to the tower to increase the building's efficiency. They can be used to remove organic compounds in air streams, such as ethanol and formaldehyde, dust, and other particulate matter. When the gas is highly pressurized or high temperature, the facility often uses pure water scrubbers to reduce fire risk.

One design consideration for a pure water scrubber is to properly contain the polluted water flowing out of the scrubber so that the pollutants will not leak into the environment. Compared with other scrubbers, pure water scrubbers are easier to maintain and therefore very useful under the right conditions.
